Title:
Description:

The Canton of Coille Stormeil
This song was written by Lady Annabeau of the Forest for the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the
Canton of Coille Stoirmeil. Recorded with permission. Lyrics are below.

Now close your eyes
drift on the wind
o'er the hill and the dell
rest ye now
and tarry in the Canton
of Coille Stoirmeil

Gather 'round yon fire
I will tell you of a land
where the sun regrets his rest
where the wee ones play
without worry in the shadow
of the Dragon's nest

Where the earth's so rich
you can sow a field of gold
and the sheep and cattle thrive
and the moon and stars
shower blessings from above
for nigh a score and five

Though rain will fall
lightning flash
and mighty oaks be felled
naught can change
the spirit in the Canton
of Coille Stoirmeil

Every warrior's heart
beats the rhythm of a drum
every sword is raised with pride
and the honor of
every lady in our land
is known both far and wide

We've a stormy clim'
and the wind may blow a gale
but our forest watch stands fast
gather by the hearth
and I'll tell you all the stories
of our glorious past

A truer man
ne'er could be found
than those folk who dwell
here within
the borders of the Canton
of Coille Stoirmeil

Now hark my lord
my lady too
pray you mark me well
all are blessed
to feast within the Canton
of Coille Stoirmeil

Stay once more
abide within the Canton
of Coille Stoirmeil

worth sharing.

Deathtrap (Bard Scribe Illuminator):
The theme will be – Deathtraps. Compose, calligraph, and illuminate a text telling us of your
deathtrap. It may be something simple and to the point or a gadget that would make Rube Goldberg
proud. This may be done individually or as a team.
This year, people are encouraged to start and have this one ready at Bardic Madness; or can also be
done the day of the event.

Rhyme Royal
Rhyme Royal: Joya bint Arwa al Jinniyya
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2016 in Illiton.

Rhyme Royal:
The rhyme royal stanza consists of seven lines, usually in iambic pentameter, set a-b-a-b-b-c-c.
Geoffrey Chaucer used it often, including for four of the Canterbury tales, and James I of Scotland
used it, perhaps inspiring the designation "Royal" rhyme. It remained very influential among
English and Scottish poets after Chaucer's death, finally falling out of fashion during the reign of
Elizabeth I.

It's James the First who gave the form its name
But Chaucer's he who's really owed the debt.
An a-b-a-b quatrain starts the game,
Then follow with a b-c-c tercet.
Another way of thinking of it yet:
A tercet with two couplets well endowed ...
And we'll say both are fair and both allowed.

A Song for Belle
Sometimes, in the SCA, you get an award ... sometimes you get a facepalm ... sometimes you create a
situation that gets you a facepalm. TRH Yngvar and Luce presented Isabella Beatrice della Rosa with
a song, beautifully rendered by Arwa al-Jinniyya at this year's Tacky Garb Ball (in the Barony of
Jararvellir in the Kingdom of Nortshield).

The theme of the event was "Bring Back the 80s and so the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" is a single
by Rick Astley, released in 1987, was very appropriate.

That All May Rise
A ballade inspired by Sir Ajax.

where havoc slips on crimson fields
is heard the howl of golden hound
who, bounding into battle wields
white lightning striking foe to ground
revealing pit and darkened mound
where festers fear to blind the eyes
light searing pure does pelt and pound
the griffin serves that all may rise

returning home to halls gone still
where once the dueling blades were crossed
with purpose learns another skill
lest knowledge to the pride be lost
through summer sun and winter frost
full focus set upon the prize
to see the sleeves again embossed
the griffin serves that all may rise

with frame and tipper keeping pace
the hunt resumes beyond the wall
the muse elusive leads the chase
with heady music to enthrall
inspiring visions broad and tall
of labor in another guise
to shield the weak that none may fall
the griffin serves that all may rise

for crown and kingdom giving all
when need reveals where duty lies
will answer gladly to the call
the griffin serves that all may rise

Varietals:
We always toast Their Majesties and Their Highnesses during feast. Lead us in a toast to someone or
something similarly deserving. (Keep it short – we want to eat! And give the servers a chance to
refill your glasses… because who wants a dry toast?)

Recorded at Bardic Madness 2018 in Grey Gargoyles.

Rondeau
The Rondeau is a French poetic form dating back to the thirteenth century. The style used in the
example below is from 16th Century England. It consists of thirteen eight syllable lines and two
repeated four syllable refrains. These fifteen lines contain are broken into three stanzas and
contain only three rhymes.

Poets in this challenge can use a different version of the Rondeau form they choose. There are
several good examples provided on the Wikipedia page:

Choose 1 of the 3 handouts and decipher what appears to be Renaissance gibberish scribblings that
appear to be in style of soliloquy, a sonnet, or perhaps it's a dialogue snippet between 2 or more
people? (Or are these recipes for how to make lasagna?)

You decide, create your own "translation" and present your findings!
