Norman & Japanese Haiku
Norman & Japanese Haiku - Hildigunnr Halldorsdottir
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2019 in the Barony of the Cleftlands

Norman & Japanese Haiku
Write both a Japanese and Norman Haiku.

Traditional Haiku:
There are only three lines, totaling 17 syllables. First line is 5 syllables. The second line is 7
syllables. The third line is 5 syllables like the first. Punctuation and capitalization are up to
the poet, and need not follow the rigid rules used in structuring sentences. Haiku are often
considered nature poems.

Interesting web article found with more information about Japanese Haiku for those interested:
https://www.tofugu.com/japan/haiku/

Norman Haiku:
Rule 1: Touch on the themes of Love, Fashion, and Sheep
Rule 2: Must be 17 Syllables

Rule 3: Last 6 syllables must be "Icky, icky, icky."
(*Optional: A 4th theme: Death! Although not *required* at all, the truly great
Norman Haikists have always been able to work death into some of their poetry.)

Example of Norman Haiku: Acknowledged by the Boreal Master and all scholars everywhere - even those
in unrelated fields - as THE purest and most classical example of Norman Haiku is this:
"No sheep, there I stood, courting Death in my shorts! Icky, icky, icky."

"Norman Haiku - A Made-Up Poetry Form From The West Kingdom"

As taught by Dahrien Cordell at KWCB VIII Saturday afternoon:

Long ago, Master Gerald of Ipsley told me that someone in the West taught him about this
uproariously silly and fun form that really has little to do with any medieval poetic endeavors I've
ever heard of. This class has even been taught at Pennsic University, which should lend it
absolutely no additional credibility. So hide your rank, wear a mask, don't tell the Laurels, then
laugh when they sit beside you! (Battery not included.)

Rhyme Royal
Rhyme Royal: Hildigunnr of Ayreton
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2016 in Illiton.

Rhyme Royal:
The rhyme royal stanza consists of seven lines, usually in iambic pentameter, set a-b-a-b-b-c-c.
Geoffrey Chaucer used it often, including for four of the Canterbury tales, and James I of Scotland
used it, perhaps inspiring the designation "Royal" rhyme. It remained very influential among
English and Scottish poets after Chaucer's death, finally falling out of fashion during the reign of
Elizabeth I.

It's James the First who gave the form its name
But Chaucer's he who's really owed the debt.
An a-b-a-b quatrain starts the game,
Then follow with a b-c-c tercet.
Another way of thinking of it yet:
A tercet with two couplets well endowed ...
And we'll say both are fair and both allowed.

Rondeau Prime: Is There More Bread
Rondeau Prime: Is There More Bread - Hildigunnr Halldorsdottir
Recorded at Bardic Madness 2022 in the Shire of the Ravenslake.

Rondeau Prime:
The rondeau prime is a shorter variation of the rondeau. It too is a French form dating from the
13th century. It contains twelve lines, which tend to be iambic. Ten of them are of similar
length, while the two half-lines restate the opening phrase. The verse is split into two sections -
seven lines in the first and five in the second. Both sections end with the half-line refrain. The
rhyme scheme is as follows: abbaccbR abbaR

A The rondeau prime is an alternate form;
B It has but twelve lines and not fifteen -
B Throughout the verse, iambs are routine.
C Now while the line lengths can be varied,
C They should stay close, like they were married.
B Except the half-line, which restates the theme:
R The rondeau prime

A So to these guidelines please conform,
B And do not let your lines careen,
B Your verse should sweetly sound serene.
A A new piece that you now perform.
R The rondeau prime
